An Example Heading

You shouldn't trifle with exploding custard. But a combustible form of the yellow stuff is one of scientist Ian Webb's favourite recipes.

Having a blast: Ian fires up the custard.

Ian travelled to Hull College to make sure that this year's National Science Week in March got off with a bang. He gave two fast-moving interactive science demonstrations to audiences of invited schoolchildren at the Riley Centre Theatre. Entitled Exploding Custard, they included 40 demonstrations using everyday household items. Custard powder was seen to turn into a fireball when ignited as dust.

"We accept no responsibility for anything that may happen in your kitchen when the children get home," Ian told parents. "Whether or not they are destined for an academic life, young people need to be shown that science can enrich their lives at every level."

Other activities organised during National Science Week by Dave Overton, Hull College's Science Project Officer, included an Open Event at the college and visits to local primary schools.
