OUT & ABOUT
NEWS FROM AROUND THE AREA COMMITTEES ...

Hull's seven area committees have joined forces to help children in the city to gain a head start in reading. They have agreed to fund Bookstart, which provides each new-born baby in Hull - some 3,000 a year - with a bag containing two books, an information booklet for parents on reading and an invitation to join their local library.

Wyke Area Committee has awarded a grant of £2,500 to Hull Zingari Club's junior section to fund an artificial practice pitch, netting and an automatic bowling machine.

The second annual Coun. Des Montgomery Sporting Event takes place on April 5 at the University of Hull Sports Centre. The tournament sponsored by Northern Hull Area Committee is open to all under 14s from the area.

A new all-weather sports area, funded by the committee and dedicated to the late councillor, has also opened at Hall Road Primary School. Meanwhile residents in the area are taking advantage of grants for security gates to restrict access to ten-foots. Four gating schemes, to be jointly funded by residents and the area committee, have been given the go ahead.

The East Hull Community Safety Forum is inviting residents to have their say on new initiatives to tackle crime. The Forum aims to continue the trend of falling crime in the area by giving residents the chance to work with representatives from the council, police, fire brigade and the community safety partnership. Meetings take place every four months. If you are interested in taking part, contact Sue Green on 331981.

The West Area Co-ordination Team would like to hear from any community groups in the area looking for support. Contact the team on 616992.

Riverside Area Committee has installed new eye-catching signs to welcome visitors to the area. The signs show a map of the area and contact details for the committee and neighbourhood forums.
