Full marks for improvement

Winifred Holtby pupils support Children in Need and (below) St. Mary's Year 11 pupils

Two Hull secondary schools have been named among the most improved schools in England.
Winifred Holtby School Technology College and St. Mary's College are among 587 secondary schools recognised by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT).
Between 2005 and 2008, the number of Year 11 pupils at Winifred Holtby who achieved five or more A* to C grades at GCSE (including English and maths) rose from one in five pupils to one in three.
And in the same period, the pass rate at St. Mary's rose from 47 to 57 per cent.
"We're proud of our achievements but we're not complacent and will continue to look for annual improvement," said Winifred Holtby head teacher Steve Liddle.
The SSAT is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising levels of achievement in secondary education, recognised the achievement.
"If every young person is to receive a world-class education then we must set world-class standards that challenge every school to improve year on year," said SSAT chief executive Elizabeth Reid.
