Are you prepared?
Sometimes an event can happen with little or no warning that has a big impact on our lives – such as the floods in 2007.
Within hours, thousands of people's lives changed dramatically.
Although you cannot stop an emergency, you can be prepared to make sure there is the minimum disruption and fewer arrangements to make for you and your family during the incident.
How prepared are you for if it floods, or there is other severe weather such as snow, ice, fog or heat waves, or if there is a major industrial incident or a pandemic flu outbreak?
If you haven't done so already, making a household emergency plan is a good place to start.
Look at how you and your family can prepare - for instance decide how you would keep in contact with each other and make sure you have essential supplies.
Once you have your plan, talk it through to make sure everyone knows what to do.
Another good idea is to draw up an emergency contact list containing all important phone numbers for people you need to reach, stored in one place.
You could also pack a "go bag" - for a swift exit – which would contain all the necessities such as keys, cash, spare clothes, medication and important documents.
