Lost in words

Read the story by Corinna Jacobs, aged 11, which won the February competition.

Was it just a dream?

Sarah waddled down the stairs with her face buried in a book, glanced at the time and hurried down the garden path and up the steps of the school bus. She found an empty seat, stared through the window at the raindrops tapping on the glass and sighed.
When Sarah got home she went straight to her room and started to read again, "I wish life was more like this book..."
Sarah was woken up the next morning by the sound of water. She jumped out of bed only to find outside were apple trees, lush, green grass and a stream. Curious as to what the cause of this may be, she went outside and plucked a yellow flower. She explored her surroundings and then stopped. "This is just like my book."
From that moment she spent the whole day having the time of her life until she paused and realised how much she missed home. She whispered into the darkness, "If I wished myself into the book, I can probably wish myself out, I wish..."
Sarah suddenly found herself in her bed. "Phew it was just a dream". But she then unclasped her hand to see a yellow flower.
