Her Majesty the Queen is greeted by Lord Mayor of Hull, Cllr Elaine Garland, as she arrives for lunch at the Guildhall |
Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh gave a royal seal of approval to Hull Paragon Interchange – just as the transport hub awaits another important phase of its development.
The royal visitors arrived by royal train last month before officially declaring the interchange open by unveiling a plaque.
Now transport managers are looking forward to the imminent opening of the Travel Extra centre within the interchange, which will be a one stop shop for disabled travellers, incorporating advice services for visually and hearing impaired passengers, and 'Shopmobility' scooter hire to give disabled people easier access around the city centre.
"It was a great honour to receive the royal couple to Hull," says Jason Read, senior public transport officer for the council's Street Scene service.
"Everything about the visit went smoothly and exactly as planned and there was minimal delay to commuters on the day.
"Travel Extra opens very soon, it will be one of the first of its kind in the country, and we were delighted that the Queen came to see the improvements we are making for the travelling public in Hull."
The interchange - which opened on September 9 2007 - handles 1,700 bus departures a day as well as being the hub of rail and coach travel in the city.
Also on the royal visitors' itinerary was a walkabout in Queen Victoria Square and visits to Castle Hill Hospital, and the Guildhall.
