Advantage Pickering
College Pupils had every reason to make a 'racquet' after a brand-new City Tennis Club (CTC) was opened at Pickering Sports College on June 16. The club is the third of its kind in the region, and has been formed through funding from the council, the LTA and the Lottery. The aim of the LTA is to regenerate areas across the country that may be run down, providing access for youngsters to play tennis in an affordable and safe environment. Jointly run by the council and the school, the outdoor courts will be available all year round for those wishing to play, providing access for around 385 local children to take part in coaching sessions and events. Helen McMullen, corporate director for Learning and Culture, said: "These facilities provide the young people of Hull with an excellent opportunity to enjoy tennis as a sport and also develop their skills. Sport is a wonderful motivator for young people and, who knows, maybe a future tennis champion will be discovered here in Hull". Hull FC director of rugby Shaun McRae was joined by around 100 pupils from Pickering Sports College and feeder primary schools at the opening ceremony.
