Finding out about film: pupils in the projection room.

Fifth Avenue film crew on show

Children at Fifth Avenue Primary School were so fed up with their classrooms being vandalised that they made a film about it.

'Our Place' was presented as part of a special screening day at the Odeon cinema, run in connection with Creative Partnerships in July. Following a school project with Credo Arts Community, which involved pupils writing imaginary letters to vandals, there have been fewer problems. Cathy Westby of Credo believes that making the film helped to shift attitudes: "A project like this helps to give the children pride in their school and their environment and confidence in what they can do to change things," she said. The event, entitled Reel Minds, attracted over 500 pupils from primary and secondary schools across Hull, as the city's Creative Partnerships programme celebrated a year in filmmaking activity.

High profile speakers from the BBC and film companies answered the children's questions about possible careers in film and television.
