New bells to ring
A carillon chime of bells is to be installed in Hull Guildhall clock tower to mark the centenary of the start of the construction of the landmark building. The project to install the bells will provide a much-improved range of chimes to be heard from the clock tower to mark the hour and quarter hours throughout the day. A party from Hull, including Coun David Gemmell, the Guildhall clock custodian David Stipetic and Jim Stephenson, managing director of Quibell's who built the Guildhall, were invited to witness the casting of four of the bells at the John Taylor Bellfoundry in Loughborough on July 8. "This will be a lasting tribute to the city for future generations to enjoy," said Coun Gemmell.
