Flood relief

#

A new start: flood victim Denise Adams (pictured centre) receives council help to refit her home

This was the moment Hull resident Denise Adams received a washing machine, a fridge and a sofa to replace items she lost when her home flooded.
Around 12 inches of water engulfed her home in Ampleforth Grove, west Hull, ruining almost everything she owned in the downstairs rooms of her house.
But the 51-year-old, who lives alone, is putting the devastation behind her after becoming one of the first residents in the city to have essential household items replaced by Hull City Council.
"I was up to my shins in water," she said. "It was absolutely awful and I lost almost everything downstairs - carpets, my cooker, the lot.
"It was such a relief when the man from the council arrived. I just want to thank everyone for their help."
Meanwhile, the council is distributing vouchers to residents affected by flooding, with which they can buy replacement items such as kettles, microwaves, tables and chairs.
And the Hull Flood Fund, set up by the council in the immediate aftermath of the flood, has raised more than £100,000 in just two weeks.
The fund has been supported by donations from members of the public, local and nationally-owned businesses, organisations and charities.
"Flood-affected residents have told us they want practical help, which is why we have been distributing household goods and vouchers to replace essential items," said council chief executive Kim Ryley.
"We are not giving residents direct cash payments from the fund, rather we are using the money to support practical ways of helping people affected by the recent flooding.
"I want to thank all those who have made a donation to support flood victims in Hull. Your generosity is much appreciated and will help our city recover from the effects of flooding."
