Thanks for help during floods
I know that this month many of you will be taken up with trying to return both your homes and lives to some level of normality after the flooding that we experienced in the city in June.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped during this period. Despite the trauma caused we have all demonstrated how we can pull together as a community for the benefit of the city. Hundreds of people have volunteered their time and assistance and I hope that this may encourage some of you to continue or spur you on to be volunteers. On pages 20 and 21, an article draws attention to the fact that there are currently more than 250 volunteering vacancies in the city and notes that Hull is one of the first cities in Britain to develop a volunteer strategy.
Meanwhile, on pages 16 and 17 you can read about how the crime rate in Hull is continuing to fall (by 24% since 2004) and about the enforcement action taken by the council's antisocial behaviour team to help make Hull a safer and better place to live. The article also looks at how partnerships working on projects such as Action Weeks and Face the Pubic meetings intend to continue with this downward trend.
Finally, on pages 12 and 13 you can read about how the St Stephen's development is taking shape.
We may already lay claim to one of the most unusual street names in the UK with the "Land of Green Ginger", but this infamous address will soon have a rival! Following a competition in Hull in Print one of the new streets in the St Stephens area will be named "The Milky Way" as a tribute to the former Northern Dairies depot once located on the site. In addition there will be a major new street which links Park Street to Ferensway – Margaret Moxon Way – named after the nineteenth century missionary from Hull who worked with freed slaves in Sierra Leone.
