Important changes to school meal charges

From September 2007 there will be a set charge of £1.10 per meal for primary and special school children. For this, pupils receive a healthy main course, pudding and a drink. Secondary children who qualify for free school meals can spend up to £1.60 per meal on a range of healthy food and drink items which are individually priced.
School meals are subsidised by the Council and the charges represent good value, being among the lowest in the country. All meals meet the latest government food standards.
You can claim a free meal if your child attends a school within Kingston upon Hull on a full time basis up to the age of 16 years or attends a sixth form school and if you are in receipt of:

  • Income Support, or Jobseekers Allowance (income based), or Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) with an annual income of £14,495 or less, or
  • Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit, or if you are an Asylum Seeker (supported by the National Asylum Support Service)

Apply now

To start receiving free school meals in September, the parent or carer who receives the qualifying benefit needs to complete an application form (form EWB1). Forms are available from all Customer Service Centres or by ringing 01482 300300.
It is important that you let us know of any changes in your circumstances e.g. change of name, address, school, younger children starting school or benefits stopping.
