A west Hull couple who lost their possessions in last year's floods, including treasured videos and photographs from 'Liberation Day' celebrations in Jersey, returned to the Channel island to mark their diamond wedding.
Ronald Griffin (84) was among the British forces who liberated Jersey from German occupation in the Second World War.
He served in the Royal Navy on board motor launches, and saw for himself the joy of local people in the island's capital St Helier when their freedom was secured in 1945.
Since then, he visited the island for 40th, 50th and 60th year Liberation Day anniversary celebrations, and when the diamond wedding came up earlier this summer, Ronald and his wife Irene (80) decided to visit.
"We lost everything in the floods and had to move out for 37 weeks although we returned home three months ago," he said.
"I have special memories of Jersey.
People were so pleased to see us on Liberation Day.
We got ashore for a couple of hours and we had a wonderful reception.
"Irene and I didn't buy each other diamond wedding presents and instead used the money to visit Jersey for a holiday."
After the war Ronald worked for the British Transport Police for 33 years, rising to the rank of Det Sgt working from Hull docks and Paragon station.
Irene stayed at home as a housewife.
They have a daughter, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
