Be prepared
Just under two-thirds of Hull residents don't feel well informed about the action they should take in the event of flooding.
And just over two-thirds don't know what action to take in the event of severe weather and flu epidemic.
That's according to research carried out earlier this year with the Hull People's Panel.
(For more about the panel see pages 24 and 25).
However since the research was carried out, a 20 page booklet 'get ready for the unexpected' has been sent to every home in the city - so it's hoped that many more people will now be aware of what do to protect their homes and families.
The booklet includes guidance on putting together a household emergency plan and compiling a personal emergency contact list, plus advice on what to do during an outbreak of pandemic flu and various types of severe weather.
Meanwhile, findings from the research indicated that less than 20 per cent of residents have a 'go' bag or box of essential items in case of an emergency (containing a torch, first aid kit, and prescribed medicines etc).
Happily, 52 per cent have a battery-operated portable AM/FM radio which is an essential part of the emergency planning kit.
If you would like a booklet please call 300300.
Advice and guidance is also available on the website www.hullcc.gov.uk by clicking on the 'let's get ready' link on the right hand menu bar on the home page.
