Summer in the City

In gear for cycle race

Don't miss your chance to watch the Tour of Britain next month, when it comes to Hull for the first time

#

It's one of the UK's elite sporting events.
96 professional cycle sportsmen, racing in 16 teams of six cyclists, will bring a sight never-before-seen to the city's roads.
Starting in London and finishing in Liverpool, the riders will compete in eight stages over eight days.
Tour of Britain Stage 5 will set off from Hull city centre (see the route map on the next page) and head north to Dalby Forest in North Yorkshire.
"We are encouraging everyone to come down and watch the event," says Cllr Kalvin Neal, who has responsibility for quality of life in the city.
"This is a big chance for Hull to showcase itself as a cycle - friendly city, and I hope people come along and enjoy the day." There will be lots of related activities in and around Queen Victoria Square and King Edward Street, such as cycling for health and fitness, bike maintenance and road safety.
There will also be BMX bike displays, exhibitions of bicycles from the 1920s, displays of modern day cycles, and modern technology such as cycle route planners on show.
Hull became a host city after Hull City Council worked in partnership with regional economic development agency Yorkshire Forward, North Lincolnshire Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and the Forestry Commission to bring the event to the region.
It is hoped children and young people will show particular interest in the event and take up cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle.
A Hull school supporting the race is Victoria Dock Primary whose pupils will visit the city centre to watch the start.
Some will also go to Dalby Forest to see the finish.
"We encourage our pupils to have a positive attitude towards health and fitness and cycling is a great way to exercise," said head teacher Denham Kite.
"There is a cycling club at our school and we have recently built a cycle shelter for pupils' bicycles, so watching the tour interests the pupils and supports what we are trying to achieve."

The race at a glance

Below is the route the Tour of Britain cyclists will take through Hull.
Use the map to choose a place to watch the action

#

The Tour of Britain will start on Vernon Street in front of the Warren building, near Queen's Gardens, at 10.30am on Thursday September 11.
The route continues to Alfred Gelder Street, Lowgate, Market Place, Garrison Road and up to Great Union Street roundabout.
The cyclists go round the roundabout before heading back on Garrison Road to Castle Street, Clive Sullivan Way and on to the Humber Bridge.
Suggested places to watch will be Alfred Gelder Street, Lowgate, Market Place and Castle Street with some restricted viewing on Vernon Street.
Meanwhile, Guildhall Road, Vernon Street and Dock Street will be closed to accommodate the race and there will be a rolling road closure along the route from 10.15am for approximately 45 minutes.
Bus routes serving the city centre are expected to face minor delays and diversions.
It is hoped as little disruption as possible will be caused to motorists and bus users but people are asked to plan their journeys carefully on the day.

Freedom is coming

A music, culture and arts festival will be launched later this month

#

Freedom Festival events will take place in Queen Victoria Square, Queen's Gardens, and other parts of the city centre on Saturday 30 August.
Three stages of live music are planned along with street theatre performances and a festival village with music and cabaret.
And the day's festivities will round off with a spectacular freedom firework finale.
This is the launch year and it is hoped it will develop into an annual festival to bring a diverse mix of culture, art and music performances to the city.
You can guarantee there'll be something for everyone, and what's more it's all free.
At the time this magazine went to press, the headline acts and precise event details were still to be confirmed, so for information please visit www.freedomfestival.co.uk
