Your views matter

The first survey of the thousands of residents who together make up Hull People's Panel has revealed some interesting findings

#

There are now 4,663 people who have let Hull City Council know that they want to get involved and give their views and feedback on its services
They come from all areas of the city and all walks of life
Together they will help the council to improve quality of life in Hull – by giving their views about council services, so that improvements can be made in all the right places
From now on, the panel will take part in surveys four times a year, whether by post, phone, fax or on-line, depending on each individual's preference
"The best way to improve council services is by understanding what our customers think and how they want to be treated," says Cllr Abigail Walker, portfolio holder for customer services at Hull City Council
"We will ask questions about a wide range of council services, listen to what the panel tells us, and then take appropriate action where necessary
"The panel offers an opportunity to find out the best ways to involve residents in working with the council, and of finding out how to involve them in decision-making and in influencing the work the council does."

Early findings

The panel has taken part in its first survey, during which the title 'Hull People's Panel' was chosen
Initial questions during recruitment revealed that:

  • seven out of ten people were satisfied with their local neighbourhoods and half believed they could influence decisions in their area
  • nearly half of people said the council needs to improve the state of roads and pavements, and a similar amount said the council needs to provide more activities for teenagers
  • almost nine out of ten people felt it was important that the council provides feedback to people who report a problem or request a service, and eight out of ten people felt it was important that queries are resolved by the council at the first point of contact Communication
  • Eight out of ten panellists had used the 300300 number to contact the council in the last year, and seven out of ten said it was their preferred method of getting in touch
  • Over half said they were well informed about council services and benefits
  • Hull in print emerged as the main way in which people found out about council services with local newspapers second and word of mouth third
  • Hull in print was also the most preferred method of finding out about the services which the council provides, with around half saying they read all, or almost all, of it

Getting involved

A large proportion of the panel members said they would like to be involved in the way the council provides its services in their neighbourhood
Three-quarters of people said they wanted to be involved in the way environmental services are provided, and around two-thirds stated they wanted to be involved in the way cultural and recreation services, and education services, are provided
Although people want to have a say, only one in ten have been to a neighbourhood meeting and only seven per cent had been to a ward forum meeting in the last year
(See pages 37-39 for more details of ward forums)
Two out of ten people have been in touch with their local councillor in the last year
