Keeping you informed

Welcome to your August edition of Hull in print.
Every month we do our best to inform you of the many ways in which Hull City Council is working on your behalf to make Hull a better place to live, learn and work.
And this month's magazine is no exception! You can read about a £30m scheme to improve Hull's flood defences, a head teacher who has won a top regional education award, and how the city's 80-mile cycle network has been extended to encourage more people to use pedal power to get around Hull.
There are also news stories about the work of trading standards, libraries, a fascinating new museum exhibit, and how an area of Bransholme is set to receive its very own beach.
Meanwhile, as Hull gets ready to host next month's Freedom music and arts festival and the start of the Clipper 09-10 international yacht race, it's so important that the city looks its best for the many visitors, dignitaries, and international media who will be making their way to our city.
As a result the teamwork of 100 council staff, including street cleaning vehicle drivers and brush litter pickers, becomes all the more important.
You can read about the contribution of one of the team, Steve Antcliffe, who is helping to maintain the cleanliness of the city centre, on pages 10 and 11.
Then, on pages 12 and 13, you can read how the Acorn Fund and Hull Deal are helping new businesses establish themselves and grow, and on pages 14 and 15 we feature a scheme called Kid Alert in which children and young people are warned to avoid places of danger and stay safe during the summer holidays.
On a different note, your views and opinions count and if there is an issue in your community that you want to inform the council about – it can be anything from a pothole in the street to litter, graffiti and antisocial behaviour – you can use the back pages of this magazine to find out how to contact your local ward councillor who can take up issues on your behalf.
Finally, I'm sure everyone will join me is wishing Hull City AFC the best of luck for the new football season which kicks off this month.
We can be proud that Hull is still a Premier League city!
