Swine flu warning
It's likely that the number of cases of swine flu will continue to increase over the coming weeks and months.
Doctors predict that we are likely to be repeatedly exposed to the virus in our everyday lives in a variety of social and work settings.
The good news is that, in the majority of cases, swine flu is a very mild disease, however, a small number of people with pre-existing health conditions have been more seriously affected.
The most effective way to help slow the spread of the virus is to adopt good hygiene practices, including regular hand washing and catching coughs and sneezes in tissues and then disposing of them properly.
Frequently wiping down hard surfaces in the home is also important.
If you suspect you have symptoms of flu you should stay at home, use the NHS symptom checker online at www.nhs.uk, or call your GP or NHS direct (on 0845 4647) for advice.
The symptoms of flu are:
- Sudden fever, usually a temperature of 38°C or above, PLUS two of the following symptoms
- Headache
- Respiratory symptoms such as cough or runny nose
- Muscle aches and pains
- Vomiting/diarrhoea
