Plans to make Hull an even greater place to live have received a major boost - with the announcement of £33.7 million in government funding.
The plans – being carried out through the Gateway Partnership – involve building new, modern homes to replace some of the worst older housing in the city.
The plans also involve the upgrade of hundreds of private houses, as well as initiatives to combat crime and antisocial behaviour in neighbourhoods.
By improving housing standards across the city, it's hoped the scheme can help prevent Hull's population decline and create a boost for the local housing market.
Gateway acting chief executive Janet Whipps said: "The funding is a major step towards achieving our long-term goal of making Hull a place where more people choose to live.
"Our aim is to cut the number of empty properties and create a much wider choice of housing in safe and vibrant neighbourhoods."
Specific projects over the next few years include the refurbishment of around 500 privately-owned homes off Anlaby Road.
Plans also include the demolition of poor-quality houses on the west side of Hawthorn Avenue, west Hull, where new homes will be built in their place.
And work has already started on the replacement of more than 500 1920s-style homes in the Ings and Preston Road areas of east Hull. New homes and facilities are also being built there.
Leader of Hull City Council, Carl Minns said: "This is excellent news for the regeneration of the city as a whole.
"People have waited a long time for this kind of investment in their housing and neighbourhood."
About Gateway
Started in 2005 with an initial grant of £16 million, the scheme is one of nine in the country - and will last between 10 and 15 years. The £33.7 million is the second phase of Gateway funding and will pay for projects over the next two years, with further funding bids to be submitted for future phases.
The scheme is running arm-in-arm with the £189 million Decent Homes Programme, which aims to bring all council homes in the city up to a safe, warm and modern standard by 2010.
