On song for freedom
Pop singer and actor Roland Gift is the latest celebrity to join the fight for freedom.
He joined more than 49,470 people, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Hollywood film director Michael Apted, in signing the Wilberforce 2007 anti-slavery petition which calls for an end to modern slavery, including people trafficking and forced labour.
He put pen to paper at Hull's Streetlife Museum during the launch of the Wilberforce 200 CD on which he performs a track.
Proceeds of the CD, which also features the talents of Roachford, Junior and Maria Lawson, will raise money to support community projects in Freetown, Hull's twin city in Sierra Leone.
The launch took place on October 25 - Hull's first-ever Freetown Day - and coincided with the departure of a convoy of vehicles from Hull to Freetown along the Freedom Trail.
It's hoped that the convoy will bring further international attention to modern slavery – and upon arrival in Freetown the trucks (pictured) will be donated to local charities.
Also beginning a journey by sea from Tilbury to Freetown was a consignment of three tonnes of law books, with a value of more than £120,000, which were donated by UK law firms to help rebuild the legal system in Sierra Leone.
The project was set up by the Freetown Society and backed by Hull City Council.
