Big thank you to foster carers

Winners: Shirley and Tony Hawkridge |
Foster carers gathered at the Guildhall recently for an awards ceremony to recognise their special work in bringing up children and young people.
Hull City Council currently supports 269 foster families and the FOSCARS ceremony is a chance to thank them for the positive difference they make to the lives of the 360 local children and young people they care for.
Around 40 families attended the event, which included awards for new carers and outstanding commitment to fostering.
"The FOSCARS is a way to thank the people who look after Hull's most vulnerable children," said Cllr Christine Randall, the deputy leader of Hull City Council and the portfolio holder for children's services.
"I was amazed by the commitment foster carers show and I hope they are proud of their achievements."
Among the stories heard were those of Shirley and Tony Hawkridge, who have given a permanent foster home to two Hull children they initially took in on a short-break foster placement.
The youngsters are happier and more confident, their school attendance has improved, and they take part in dancing, swimming, netball and drama.
Shirley and Tony have fostered eight children over the last two-and-a-half years and still take in youngsters on short breaks.
"We are just doing what we feel is right," said Shirley. "We have six grandchildren of our own and we want to share our family life with children who are less fortunate and who can benefit from the care we provide."
All foster carers receive a range of benefits including financial allowances and 'Tonic' cards which give free or discounted entry to various leisure activities.
