Home win at football ground
Residents in west Hull whose homes adjoin the former Boothferry Park football ground have achieved a victory against antisocial behaviour and environmental crime at the site.
They worked in partnership with Hull City Council and the stadium's landowner Paloma Land Ltd to improve safety and the environment at the ground.
After concerns were raised at public meetings that fly tipping and arson attacks were taking place, the council served notices to the landowner to clear the land of rubbish and put up a 2.4 metre-high fence to secure it.
"Local residents did the right thing by telling us their concerns because it meant action could be taken," said Newington ward member Cllr Rick Welton.
"We are pleased that Paloma has been co-operative in helping to resolve the problems and make the area a safer place to live."
Meanwhile, residents across the city who witness antisocial behaviour and environmental crime can report incidents by giving as many details as possible, including times, dates and descriptions of people and vehicles involved.
Evidence compiled enables the council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue and other agencies to take enforcement action.
For Boothferry Park residents, speaking out has already paid dividends.
"Things have improved since the gates were put up and we feel much better about the situation," says Michael Rands, chairman of the Plowden Road and Kempton Road residents' association.
"I encourage other Hull residents to speak out because it makes a difference."
