Ringing the changes
Tenant volunteers are taking to the phones to support the council's housing service by asking customers if they are satisfied with the way their gas appliances are serviced.
So far more than 1,000 customers have been called and the telephone-based service is proving a success.
"We found that over 95 per cent of people we talked to were satisfied," says Betty Peck, chair of the Tenants' Forum.
"I think it's a really good idea to have tenants talking directly to other tenants, helping to monitor the services the council offers."
Meanwhile, the housing service is urging customers to assist by allowing operatives into their homes to carry out a free annual gas safety check.
Contractors have already provided over 98 per cent of customers' homes with their annual gas safety certificate.
"Servicing is a continuing operation for us and every 12 months we need to check appliances and update the gas safety certificate," says Paul Cromack, partnership manager at the housing investment service.
"Although we have seen many of our customers, there are still some houses in the city where we are trying to gain access to carry out the servicing.
"It is absolutely vital that customers help us by allowing us into their homes to carry out these important, life-saving checks."
Access to the service has been improved, and a range of time and day slots are available on request, including Saturday and evening appointments.
Customers are asked to keep appointment times where possible, or alternatively, let contractor Kingstown Works Ltd know if it needs changing by calling 614164 for residents in the central, west or north Hull areas, or 318541 for tenants in Bransholme or east Hull.
