History in the making
Hull's newest landmark, the Hull History Centre, opens its doors fully to the public on 25 January.
Holding treasures such as the letters and speeches of William Wilberforce and the papers of poets Philip Larkin and Andrew Marvell, the centre will be open to everyone from primary school children to people who want to trace their family tree.
"We'll be hosting regular events for the public, as well as giving out easy-to-use guides showing people how to make the most of the service," says city archivist Martin Taylor.
With enough boxes of archives to stretch across the Humber Bridge four times over, the centre is the result of a partnership between Hull City Council and the University of Hull.
Located next to Hull New Theatre, it brings together material held by the council's City Archives and Local Studies Library with archives from the University of Hull.
The centre was part-funded by a £7.7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
