Holocaust Memorial Day
A free public event will be held next month to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
In 2010 it will be 65 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in World War Two.
As part of Hull's contribution to the national day of commemoration, Trude Silman (of the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association of Leeds) will speak in the Guildhall about exclusion, persecution, resilience and hope.
Trude came to England as a nine-year-old refugee in 1939 and lost her parents and many other family members in the Holocaust.
The event will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Hull Cllr Karen Woods, the Bishop of Hull, the Right Reverend Richard Frith, and the Rabbi of the Hull Hebrew Congregation, Rabbi Shalom Osdoba.
It takes place on 27 January – attendees should arrive at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Discounts on Christmas shopping
Shoppers on Holderness Road who use environmentally-friendly shopping bags (pictured left) are being offered discounts by local shops under a new scheme.
The scheme, called Hub Local, begins on 19 December and will run into the new year in a bid to boost trade
"It's a way of addressing decreasing footfall in the area by making shoppers aware of the services offered by local traders and businesses," says Glen Bartholomew, of The East Hull Employment and Enterprise HUB, a project aimed at boosting employment and trade.
To coincide with the launch there will be a Christmas party at Balfour Community Centre, on Victor Street, between 10am and 4pm, featuring a children's pantomime, competitions, food and refreshments.
To receive your shopping bag, and to find out which shops are taking part in the scheme, call the Hub Local team on 706363 or email hublocal@hullhub.co.uk
Recipes for health
Pupils from the Wyke area of Hull have published a cookery book full of recipes for healthy meals.
The book, 'Wyke Wonderfood: wonderfuel for kids', includes recipes such as Carrot Sunshine Soup, Cheesy Potato Grills and Apple Flapjack.
They were contributed by pupils in cookery clubs at Lambert Nursery, Appleton, Bricknell, Sidmouth, Stepney and Thoresby primary schools.
The book was launched last month at Bricknell Primary School, when pupils demonstrated some of the dishes to other children and their parents.
Paul Browning, head teacher at Stepney Primary School, said: "Last year schools in the area teamed up as part of a major cooking initiative.
"Throughout the year delightful aromas of baking and cooking filled the classrooms of the schools that took part.
This book is a result of the tremendous success of the project."
Back Hull's World Cup bid
Hull City Council is urging residents to get behind a bid to bring the 2018 World Cup to Hull.
If successful in its bid to be a host city for the tournament, Hull and East Yorkshire could see benefits including new jobs, investment in regeneration projects and increased visitor numbers as football fans descend on the region to attend matches and 'fan parks'.
When Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup, over three million spectators watched matches at stadiums and on big screens in city centres throughout the country, while an estimated 85,000 jobs were created.
You can register your support for Hull's bid at www.england2018bid.com by clicking on 'Supporters' and selecting Hull as your favourite host city.
How can we improve?
Do you have a complaint about a service provided by Hull City Council?
Would you like to give comments or compliments?
If so, why not contact the council's new team dedicated to handling customer feedback.
"Although most of our services work well, amongst the millions of transactions we handle each year we know that sometimes things go wrong," says customer relations manager Briony Douglas.
"We want to make it easier for people to tell us about their experience as customers – this will help us learn more from any mistakes we make."
Contact the council's corporate customer feedback team by calling 300 300, emailing customerfeedback@hullcc.gov.uk, using the form you can find on www.hullcc.gov.uk or by visiting your nearest customer service centre or information point.
Bin it – don't flush it
Residents are being urged to help prevent flooding by not disposing of waste down the sink and sewers.
Cooking oils, grease, fat, sanitary products, nappies, and even false teeth are just some of the items flushed down the toilet or allow to drain down the plug hole.
Yorkshire Water, which removes 20,000 blockages from sewers in the region each year, is now using its website to urge people to 'Bin It Don't Flush It.'
"We are seeing more and more flooding caused by extreme weather and the effects of this can be much worse if sewers are blocked by fat, wipes or nappies," said Trevor Birch, the network asset manager at Yorkshire Water.

Fruit market move
Hull fruit traders have moved to a new home at Priory Park, west Hull, thanks to an investment of £1.67m from Hull City Council.
The traders moved from their historic Humber Street base last month, and are now trading on a 70,000 sq ft purpose-built market costing £3.5m.
The move will allow the Humber Street area to be redeveloped as part of the council's city centre masterplan.
"This opens up opportunities to redevelop one of the key and historic regeneration areas of the city," says Cllr Rick Welton, who is responsible for regeneration in the city.
"At the same time, it secures the future of both this historic business community and the people who work within it."
Need a permit?
Hull residents who need permits to park vehicles outside their properties can apply for them at their nearest customer service centre (CSC), from 4 January.
Residents no longer need to go to the council's parking counter service at Kingston House, Albion Street, in order to get their permits.
This will close from 31 December.
Residents who need a scratch card for visitors or a temporary permit for contractors can also apply at CSCs.
To find your nearest CSC and opening times, see page 4.
