Beverley Road safety warning
 |
Night-time pub and club-goers on Beverley Road have been warned to watch out for traffic dangers.
The number of pedestrians being injured by traffic is increasing at an alarming rate, say Hull City Council road safety officers.
On all other roads in the city, pedestrian casualties have fallen by 40 per cent in the last ten years, but on Beverley Road, 12 people have been injured by traffic since 2003 (five of them seriously), and 18 months ago a person was killed near the junction with Station Drive.
"People need to be more responsible when walking along or crossing the road after dark," said road safety officer Mark Jessop.
Hull City Council may now introduce safety measures, including the installation of electronic signs to warn drivers that there may be pedestrians on the road.
Pedestrian barriers could also be installed to stop people falling or stumbling into the road.
Traffic lights along the route have already been re-timed over the last year to slow traffic down between 10pm and 2am, making it safer for people to cross.
Cllr Mark Collinson, who has responsibility for transport, said the council was open to suggestions to a solution. He said: "Beverley Road is a main route and is heavily used by buses and emergency vehicles, so conventional traffic calming isn't possible."
Meanwhile, fire officers have been visiting pubs on Beverley Road to make sure drinkers and pedestrians heed the safety message.
