New local government electoral arrangements are likely to be introduced to Hull. A report by the Local Government Commission for England recommends that the city should have two more council wards but one fewer councillor. The Commission, which started its review of Hull last May, proposes that there should be 59 councillors serving 22 wards. As a consequence, some ward boundaries are likely to change. Commission chairman Professor Malcolm Grant says that the aim of the review is to ensure, as far as possible within each district, that one person's vote should have the same value as another's. The review reveals, for example, that people in Sutton ward are under-represented whereas Marfleet councillors serve 17 per cent fewer electors than the district average. The consultation period on the proposals ends on February 19 and they are open to change depending on the responses. Copies of the report are available at City Council offices and public libraries, on the Commission's website at www.lgce.gov.uk or by post from: The Review Manager (Kingston upon Hull) Representations on the Commission's draft proposals should be made by writing to this address. |
