Pride of place
Pride of place: Animals in Art runs until June. The Ferens Winter Exhibition runs from February 17th to April 22nd 2001
A city centre gallery is set to become an ark of art over coming months. Ferens Art Gallery's Creature Feature is turning the spotlight on the many animals that appear in its paintings and sculptures. Among the stars of the show will be a sinister rat, an aristocratic horse, pampered pooches and a life-sized pride of lions.

A selection of museum specimens from Hull's natural history collection will complement the artworks, which date from the 16th Century to the present day. And for youngsters, there will be a mystery trail providing clues to the whereabouts of other animals around the gallery as well as a special children's poetry competition. The gallery's annual Winter Exhibition, which gets under way next week, could also include works inspired by the animal kingdom.

In previous years, the exhibition, which attracts works from amateur and professional artists around the country, has included everything from life-sized lion sculptures to watercolours of the River Hull. Many of the works on show will be for sale and the creator of the best piece of work will be awarded £150 worth of artists' materials from The Drawing Group, with two runner-up prizes of £50.

Artist Jenny Barson will also be running three workshops on March 13-15 for adults looking to brush up on their skills. Please contact the gallery, tel. 613902, to book your place.
