Third world debt

» Italy gets the message:

Sending postcards to Italy might seem a bit like sending coals to Newcastle. But that's exactly what debt relief campaigners in Hull are urging local people to do. The postcard, which depicts the Wilberforce Monument in Queens Gardens, asks the Italian Prime Minister to play a leading role in cancelling Third World debts.

The country is due to host the next G8 Summit, which will be attended by the leaders of the world's richest countries later this year. The message in Italian reads: 'Wilberforce led the campaign to end slavery. May Italy lead the campaign to end debt slavery'. Sylvia Usher of the Hull Jubilee 2000 group, which has produced the cards, explained: "The Wilberforce Memorial is very important to the people of Hull because it symbolises the city's commitment to fighting the injustice of slavery. We hope that many Hull people will send this postcard to inspire the Italian government in the campaign against the modern slavery of debt."

Last November Jubilee 2000 received a major boost when the UK Government agreed to write off £2bn worth of debts owed by 41 highly indebted poor countries. Postcards are available from Sylvia Usher, tel. 448065, and from the One World Trading shop on Waltham Street.
