| » Tuning in to The Deep: |
Millions of TV viewers across the region are to get a sneak preview of The Deep ahead of its official opening next year. The three-part Yorkshire Television documentary series will provide a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes as work progresses on the UK's first ever ocean discovery centre.
The cameras will follow The Deep's curator Dr David Gibson as he visits faraway locations like Fiji and Florida looking for exotic species for the £40m millennium project's ocean displays. Programme producer Peter Cook said: "I am originally from Hull and feel privileged to be able to take our cameras behind the scenes to follow The Deep's progress. It will make fascinating TV." The Deep's chief executive Colin Brown added: "This is a tremendous boost to our plans to publicise The Deep at its launch." - The University of Hull has been awarded £350,000 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to build a small-scale 'ocean' at The Deep. The 'total environment simulator' will be one of the centrepiece displays at the visitor attraction at Sammy's Point and, it is hoped, a focus for international environmental research. The 200-tonne tank, one of only three of its kind in the world, will simulate the behaviour of river, estuary and coastal environments. An array of nozzles and paddles will be used to create waves, tides and rainfall, enabling scientists to study the different factors affecting coastal erosion and sedimentation. Their findings will be presented to visitors to The Deep using special interactive displays. |
