Safety tips
Emergencies are happening somewhere almost every minute of the day, and most are dealt with by the police, fire and ambulance services.
Here are some tips to help the emergency services, and to avoid emergencies altogether.
- Install smoke detectors in your home, especially near bedrooms, and regularly check the batteries.
Also consider using a carbon monoxide detector
- Make sure that you have a complete first aid kit, and think about taking a first aid course
- Carry out regular maintenance checks on your home, any outbuildings and your car, and keep up to date with repairs
- If you smell gas, turn it off at the main valve.
Open all windows and report the fault
- Keep medication and hazardous cleaning products locked safely away from children
- Teach your children to stay away from potential dangers including open water, electricity pylons and railway lines
- Teach your children how and when to ring 999 so that they know to call only if there is danger to life, use or threatened use of violence, serious injury to a person or serious damage to property
- In the first phases of an emergency such as flooding, pollution or a major transport accident, there may be some confusion which leads to panic.
Try to remain calm, tune in to local radio or TV bulletins, get the facts and follow instructions
