Fantastic February

It's goodbye from the Tilbury News Crew, who would like to thank everyone who entered their competitions and to wish good luck to the new News Crew from Marfleet Primary School who take over next month.

Valentine's Day – 14th February
Don't forget to send a card to someone you love

Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day - 24th February

The word 'shrove' comes from an old English word 'shrive' which means to confess.
On this day, Christians would say sorry for the wrong things they had done and be forgiven before the time of Lent. Lent is a time of giving things up and Shrove Tuesday is a time for using up all the food that you cannot eat during Lent e.g. flour, butter and eggs which are used to make pancakes. Our favourite toppings are: golden syrup, strawberry or raspberry jam, strawberries, or chocolate spread. Lent is the 40 days before Easter ( not including Sundays). In some parts of the world it is called 'Mardi Gras' which means 'Fat Tuesday'.

National Doodle Day - 27th February

This event raises funds for Epilepsy Action and The Neurofibromatosis Association which are charities that help people who have these health problems. Prizes can be won in a competition – you can find out more by looking at their website at www.nationaldoodleday.org.uk

Fairtrade Fortnight – 28th February to 8th March

Fairtrade Fortnight lets people know about the importance of buying Fairtrade products like bananas, chocolate, tea, coffee, juices, fruit and vegetables, rice and sugar. There are about 3,000 different Fairtrade foods and things like sports balls and cotton. Fairtrade means that farmers in developing countries such as India, South and Central Americas and African countries are paid a fair price for their products.
Your school or group could help support Fairtrade Fortnight by downloading posters from the Fairtrade Foundation website at www.fairtrade.org.uk or by organising a fairtrade event.
