Windfall for woodland

Calendar presenter Gaynor Barnes and schoolchildren from Bransholme present a cheque to fund a woodland project |
A Hull-based environmental project recently received £50,000 – thanks to viewers who voted for the scheme via a television phone-in poll.
The Bransholme Woodland Warriors will use the money to pay for tools, plant trees, provide litter bins and picnic benches, replace footpaths and railings, and hold events such as bird watching sessions and bug hunts at Noddle Hill Community Woodland.
The warriors are local residents and community workers who entered their project into the Big Lottery Fund People's Millions competition.
After being featured on the Calendar regional news programme as Hull's only entrant, they topped a phone poll of rival projects from across the Yorkshire area to win the cash.
"We are absolutely over the moon to have won the money and we owe a big thank you to everyone who voted for us," said Sam Linton, manager of Bransholme Enterprises, a not-for-profit social enterprise which supported the Woodland Warriors' entry in the competition.
The woodland, which is roughly the size of six football pitches, was planted in 1995 and many trees are reaching maturity.
The land is owned by Hull City Council and council staff will work with community volunteers to remove litter and clean up the site.
