Recycle cards and trees

*

More than 15,000 real Christmas trees and almost a million Christmas cards will need to be recycled in Hull this month.
And residents are being urged not to simply "throw them out," but to recycle them in the proper way:

  • Christmas trees can be taken to Wilmington and Burma Drive household waste recycling sites, where they will be shredded and made into compost.
  • And between January 2 and 8, they can also be taken to skips at Tesco, Beverley High Road, or Sainsbury's, off Priory Way, in Hessle.
  • Christmas cards can be recycled until January 31 at all WHSmiths, TK Maxx and Tesco stores, and at participating schools.
  • Christmas and other celebratory cards can also be taken to Burma Drive or Wilmington household recycling sites all year round.

Meanwhile, Hull City Council's waste management team is urging residents to make a New Year's resolution to reduce, reuse and recycle more household waste.
"Last Christmas, the recycling rate in Hull rose by 26 per cent on the previous year, and I'm confident it can rise even higher this year," said Cllr Dave Woods, who is responsible for recycling in the city.
"Recycling is a habit we need to get into for the rest of our lives, not just at Christmas."
See the back cover of this issue of Hull in print for tips on recycling glass bottles.

Have your say on smoking ban

*

Is giving up smoking your new year's resolution?
In July this year it will be illegal to smoke in enclosed public places and workplaces.
And the Humber Alliance on Tobacco (Halt) is running an on-line survey to find out if local people support or oppose the ban.
Hull City Council acted well in advance of the smoking ban when, last September, it banned smoking in all its buildings and places of work, including vehicles. To cast your vote, visit www.halt.uk.net *
