Road to better health
Older people in Hull are being invited to a series of road shows beginning this month to help them live healthier and more independent lives.
Practicing the ancient Chinese art of T'ai Chi can help improve posture, circulation, relaxation and balance.
And it's just one of the things which older people are being encouraged to find out more about - at health road shows beginning this month.
The road shows, organised by Hull City Council and the NHS in Hull, will provide a wide range of advice to help older people live more safely and independently at home, including healthy eating, home adaptations, day care services and ways of preventing falls in the home.
They can also learn about the benefits of the free HandyVan service, through which security experts can visit their homes and carry out security upgrades such as fitting window locks and door chains.
And about the Telecare service, through which vulnerable residents are connected to 24-hour support through a special hotline.
"The roadshows are a chance for older people to learn about the many services available to them," says Angela Dunn, Hull City Council's head of community care services.
"But they are also a chance for older people to tell us what they think of those services so we can use those views to put together a strategy to improve the services even more."
Working together
Hull City Council is working with a range of other organisations across the city to provide community care services for older people. These include:
- University of Hull
- Hull Churches Home from Hospital service
- Age Concern
- Alzheimer's Society
- Carers Centre
- Probe (Hull) Ltd
- Preston Road NDC and the Freedom Centre
- The Goodwin Development Trust and the Hooper Building
- Business Link Humber

- Hull NHS Teaching Primary Care Trust
"The council and its partners are committed to helping older people live healthier and more independent lives," says Cllr Stephen Baker, who has responsibility for health in the city.
"We are trying new ways – such as roadshows - to reach people who need services the most. The benefits can be potentially life changing."
