Don't forget to recycle
The amount of rubbish thrown out by Hull residents goes up by a third over Christmas and New Year. Here are some tips to help you recycle more ...
Recycle your tree
More than 15,000 real Christmas trees went on display in Hull homes this festive season. If they were placed on top of each other, they would stand 17 miles high and reach through the stratosphere and into space.
But rather than let them go to waste, they can be recycled by being chipped, shredded and turned into compost to make plants and vegetables grow.
You can recycle your Christmas trees at the Burma Drive, Wilmington and Wiltshire Road household waste and recycling centres.
Recycle Christmas cards
More than 1,000,000 greetings cards are sent and then thrown away in Hull every year.
Cards can be recycled at the household waste and recycling centres – and at local branches of WH Smith, Tesco, T.K.Maxx and M&S.
Together, these stores and the council are supporting the Woodland Trust's Christmas card recycling scheme, which runs until January 31, and aims to raise funds to plant 24,000 trees by collecting 100 million cards across the country.
Recycle bottles and cans
Use your black box to recycle plastic bottles, food and drink tins and cans, aluminium foil and aerosols, glass bottles and jars. All glass colours can be accepted, not just clear.
Play your part
The Government has set the council tough` targets to recycle 45 per cent of the city's waste by 2010.
"Recycling Christmas trees and cards is a must if we are to reach our target," says Cllr Dave Woods who has responsibility for the environment in the city.
"More and more people are expressing their desire to become involved with recycling, and we as a council are endeavouring to make recycling easier."
