Recording artists: This group of Hull teenagers have formed a group called Freedom Road and can now be heard on their debut CD |
A group of young people put their vocal talents to the fore as part of a CD project to commemorate the life and achievements of William Wilberforce.
The 11 to 16-year-olds, who have formed a musical group called Freedom Road, can now be heard on a three-track CD called ‘Songs for Wilberforce.’
They attend the Rights and Participation Project (RAPP), based at The Warren in Queen’s Gardens, which provides opportunities for young people to express themselves in positive and creative ways.
And proceeds from sales of the CD could enable a singing group of blind children from the Milton Margai School in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to visit and perform in Hull later this summer.
“We’re really proud of the CD and so far it has raised £2,000 in sales,” says development worker Ian Bolton from RAPP. “All the young people who took part really gave it their all.”
“With every CD sold, the likelihood of the school group from Freetown visiting Hull increases,” Mr Bolton adds.
“The blind children will be touring the UK this summer and we hope to cover their costs for a visit to Hull. It would all tie in so perfectly with Hull’s Wilberforce 2007 commemorations as Sierra Leone was set up as a nation of freed slaves.”
