Cllr Carl Minns

Here’s to a great summer!

This issue contains information about the many exciting events that are happening in Hull over the summer, and there really is something for everyone to look forward to!
One of the major events is the Wilberforce Weekender which takes place from July 27-29. It includes the Sankofa Sunsplash, Hull Jazz Festival, the HMS York naval destroyer open day and the visit of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race fleet, to name but a few attractions. Have a look at pages 21-24 for more information and join in the fun!
Another very important issue for the city over the coming months is the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) consultation. The BSF proposals have been drawn up by the Learning Partnership, which involves key education professionals from across the city representing schools, colleges, the University of Hull and many others. The crucial aspect of the programme is that we must focus on improving education in the city, and whilst we recognise that getting the buildings right is an important part of this, we also know that success does not hinge solely on having fantastic buildings!
Members of the Learning Partnership have been clear that improving education is their priority and we now want to hear from you. What do you think are the important issues for education in Hull? What are your aspirations for the future of education in the city?
What are your views about the proposals outlined? This edition contains further information on pages 12-15 about the programme and the consultation process which will help you to make sure that your views are heard.
Lastly, July 1 was the date we went ‘smokefree.’ Virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England are now smokefree, ensuring that we have a healthier environment in which to socialise, relax, travel, shop and work. To find out how Hull smokers are being helped to give up see pages 16 -17.
I hope you enjoy the summer events programme that has been laid on this year, and whether you are going away or staying here for the summer I hope you have a good time.
