Day of cheeky fun

Pop star twins The Cheeky Girls (pictured) will be top of the bill at Dove House Day on July 22 in West Park.
The family fun day, between 11am and 4pm, features a fun fair, bungee jumping, CAMRA beer festival, dog agility competition, teachers sports day, soccer competition and model railway.
Also present will be style guru John Scott and TV soaps expert Sharon Marshall, both from ITV’s This Morning.
It’s hoped all the celebrities will be signing Hull’s anti-slavery petition.
The public will also be able to buy copies of a pop single released by Dove House called “From Hull to Kings Cross” sang by R&B singer Jocelyn Brown.
Meanwhile, celebrity hair stylist Mark Hill’s team will also be on hand to give away a makeover as first prize in a competition to find the city’s best carer.
To nominate a carer, to find out more about the event, or to raise money for Dove House, visit www.dovehouseday.org.uk

For more fun events see page 36 to 38.

What a relief

The public toilets in Queen Victoria Square have reopened after maintenance work.
The Grade Two listed building, which first opened in 1925, was closed as its electrical installation was considered unsafe due to rain water leaking through the roof.
Now, after £50,000 of work, the public convenience has been refurbished with a new electrical installation and its roof, steps and statue base have been repaired.
Spending a penny costs nothing as the toilets remain free for the public to use.

Trade mission reaps rewards

City leaders will visit Rotterdam, northern Europe’s busiest port, in a bid to bring more international shipping and freight to the wider Humber region.
Council leader Cllr Carl Minns and Matthew Kennerley, the director of the Port of Hull, will meet Rotterdam city leaders, senior members of the Rotterdam port authority, and representatives from international shipping companies later this month.
“The trade mission will promote the benefits of doing business in Hull and the Humber,” said Helen Stinson, economic development officer at the council.
“Hopefully it will bring more shipping freight and as a result more jobs to the Hull area.”
The Hull delegation will visit Rotterdam at the same time as the Yorkshire Forward Hull and Humber Clipper sets sail from the Dutch port to compete in the Wilberforce Cup yacht race across the North Sea to Hull.
For more on the race see page 24.

Recognising good service

Amy Baker receives her award from Kim Ryley, chief executive of Hull City Council

An awards scheme has been launched for members of the public to nominate council staff who make an outstanding contribution to public service in their jobs.
No matter what the council service (it can be anything from dealing with abandoned vehicles to zebra crossings) any member of staff who impresses can be nominated.
First to receive a ‘Making a Difference’ award was Amy Baker (pictured) who is a community participation officer for Pickering and Boothferry.
Amy was recognised for her overall work, including the way she organised last summer’s West Hull Family Festival in which 6,000 local residents were treated to a sandy beach and fairground rides in Costello Peter Pan Park.
To make a nomination call 300300.

Do it in style

Members of the Hermes Hermits team enjoy an adventure holiday in Wales after collecting hundreds of sacks of litter from Bilton Grange for their project during last year’s Lifestyle, which was entered by more than 5,000 young people.

Young people are this summer being invited to help their local communities by taking part in Humberside Police’s Lifestyle 2007 campaign.
Whether it’s caring for animals, entertaining people, cleaning up the environment or helping the elderly or disabled with gardening or shopping, groups of up to five friends between the ages of ten and 18 are invited to sign up.
Top prize for the best project is a holiday to Walt Disney World in Florida, plus there are hundreds of smaller prizes, from adventure holidays to T-shirts and certificates.
The campaign is being run in conjunction with BP Chemicals and Hull Streetscene.
For more information visit www.humberside.police.uk/lifestyle or pick up a registration form from any Hull school or library.

Claim your entitlement

Has your home been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled adult or child? If the answer is yes you could get a reduction on your Council Tax bills.
In Hull at present, only 400 people are claiming Council Tax Disablement Relief, but it is believed many more are entitled to it.
To claim the relief a room within the property must have been adapted, whether that’s the bathroom, kitchen or other room used by a permanently and substantially disabled person.
The reduction will lower your Council Tax bill to the next band down. Even householders at band A (the lowest rate) get a reduction.
For details call 300300 and quote Council Tax Disablement Relief.

Hull united

A city park will be the setting for a day-long celebration to bring people together – no matter what their differences may be.
Hull Pride takes place in Pearson Park off Beverley Road on Saturday July 28, where organisers will provide a specially constructed stage as the focal point of the event.
A wide range of musicians and entertainers will take the stage from 1pm to 6pm, and there will also be stalls to browse and refreshments on sale.
Hull Pride is organised by the Hull Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans Forum and this year has a theme of ‘United in Diversity’.
Backed by Humberside Police, the day is designed to allow people to meet together and celebrate who they are in a safe environment.
