School’s new chapter
A new lease of life is being sought for an historic building off Witham, near the city centre.
The former Malton Street primary school, a privately-owned grade 2 listed building, has been empty for ten years, but would be ideal for a number of business uses.
Subject to planning permission, it could be used as a training centre, day nursery, offices, storage space, or small business or workshop unit, say council planners.
“It’s had some urgent repair work to keep out the wind and rain, and still needs more work doing, but is an attractive building in a central location with parking space adjacent,” says Cllr John Fareham, chairman of Hull City Council’s planning committee.
Built in 1888, the former school (pictured, top right) has been on the council’s Buildings at Risk Register for some time.
Part of being on the register means a building’s owners or prospective owners can get advice about possible new uses and repair techniques, and about how to access grants for refurbishment where available.
“We offer a limited service but ultimately owners of empty buildings must take responsibility themselves for finding appropriate uses for them,” adds Cllr Fareham.
Other listed buildings which have found a new lease of life since being added to the list include the former hotel at 78 Beverley Road, built in 1845, which has been converted into apartments
(pictured, far left).
The former Hull Brewery building (also pictured far left), on Jarratt Street, built in 1867, was also converted into offices.
