Snake not rattled by rescue

#

Hull City Council park ranger Tom Darley with Cyril the snake

Cyril the snake is living a safer and more peaceful life now, after being found under a car in Hereford Street, west Hull.
A local resident was distressed after finding the 4ft-long reptile - a Californian King Snake - late one night.
But council staff had the answer, after the resident dialled 300300.
Members of the Civic One team, which handles council emergencies out of normal working hours, put the snake in a blue wheelie bin (normally used for recycling newspapers rather than snakes).
The next day they transported the snake to the council's Victorian conservatory at Pearson Park, where staff look after a range of exotic creatures including snakes, lizards and bird-eating spiders, some of which have also been rescued.
"The snake was quite calm and seemed used to being handled by people," said Andy Smithson, Civic One duty shift supervisor.
"We thought the name Cyril suited him best.
"At first we were concerned that he may not survive, but staff in the conservatory were very happy to take him and, hopefully, he's much better off there now."
The species of snake is normally found in the wild in southern parts of North America.
Wildlife development officer Richard Brown said: "It's a constrictor in that it is a snake that grabs its prey and squeezes it either unconscious or dead before consuming it."
"They are a popular pet snake.
They grow to around 2 metres, can be handled and will live up to 15 years or so."

Animals in the Victorian conservatory can be viewed by the public seven days a week between 8am and 4pm.
