We’re in good shape
Hull City Council’s leisure centres and facilities have won an award for excellence

Each week thousands of local people, young and old, use Hull City Council’s leisure facilities – and by doing so improve their health, fitness and wellbeing.
And now the council’s leisure service has been accredited with the Customer Service Excellence Award (CSE), which is the government’s national standard for excellence in customer services.
The council runs 11 separate leisure facilities across the city, including swimming pools and golf courses, as well as Ennerdale and Woodford leisure centres and Hull Arena.
Together, the facilities employ more than 300 staff, from receptionists to swimming pool attendants to fitness instructors.
“The service must be forward thinking and always looking to develop,” says Peter Appleton, head of culture and lifestyle at Hull City Council.
“We recognise that leisure is a competitive market, our facilities and activities have to be constantly reviewed and upgraded to meet the changing expectations of customers.”
In granting the award, an external assessor visited various sites over a two-day period, and spoke to customers, partners and staff.
Some of the strengths highlighted by the assessment were that customer consultation and engagement takes place, that the service makes an effort to engage hard-to-reach groups, and that staff contribution is recognised.
