If in doubt, keep them out
Hull residents are being urged to beware of ‘distraction’ burglars, who pose as officials or odd job men to gain access to homes.
Elderly or vulnerable residents are most often targeted by these burglars, who sometimes work in pairs or even teams, say police.
“Bogus calling is a way of gaining entry into your home without breaking in,” says PC Trevor Waudby, crime reduction officer, at Hull Citysafe.
“These callers may state they are from one of the utility companies or offer gardening or odd job services.
“Once inside, one of them will keep the resident distracted while the other searches the house for money or other valuables.
“They can be very convincing.
The best advice to residents is ‘if in doubt, keep them out!’ “Only let them in when you are absolutely sure that they are genuine.”
Humberside Police advice is as follows:
LOCK: Make sure your door is locked when you’re at home and don’t unlock it until you’re sure who is on the other side.
STOP: If someone appears at your door, and you’re not expecting any visitors, look through the spy-hole or the window to see who it is.
CHAIN: If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first.
Keep the bar or chain on while you’re talking.
CHECK: Never let anyone in your house unless you’re sure of who they are.
A genuine caller should be able to provide proof of identity.
When verifying a caller’s identity, always ring the number for their company shown in the telephone directory, not one the caller gives you, as this may be just their accomplice.
Residents who suspect distraction burglars are operating in their neighbourhoods are urged to contact police on 0845 606 0222.
