Catch on to game
A new computer game has been launched by Hull City Council to help children and young people learn how to prepare for emergencies.
The game, which can be found on the www.cluedupinhull.com website, is based around the idea of filling an emergency 'go-bag' with the right items.
In real life, a go-bag is a small, easy-to-carry bag containing essentials.
It should be left in an accessible place so that you are ‘ready to go’ in the event of an emergency such as severe weather, flooding, industrial accidents and major transport hazards.
In the computer game, the player gets a choice of being different characters – whether a police officer, fire fighter, doctor or coastguard – who must catch a range of items for a go-bag which fall from the sky.
The character must catch the useful items while discarding the others.
The more items a character catches, the harder the game gets, but the higher the score.
The game also allows friends to compete against each other.
“It’s a great way of introducing the idea of emergency planning to children and young people,” said project officer Nick Schimmel.
“The game is backed up with lots of relevant information which should help Hull's children and young people if the are faced with an emergency situation.”
Contents for a go-bag should include key documents, first aid kit, battery-operated radio, mobile phone and charger, glasses or contact lenses and any special items for babies, children, elderly and disabled people.
