It’s hoped more than £50,000 will be raised for local causes through the Hessle Road Pram Race on Saturday 5 September.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the race, which it is hoped will revive the old-fashioned community spirit of Hessle Road.
It began in the 1920s and 30s, as a ‘send up’ of trawlermen’s wives who would rush down to the dock offices to draw their husbands’ wages on payday.
While the tradition died out over time, it was revived between 1986 and 1989, as the pictures right show.
This year the race is being held once again, thanks to a range of local groups, including Community Action Box, Gateway, Hessle Road Network, community wardens, local businesses and community groups.
“We hope to make this a great annual get-together again, and raise the spirit and friendliness of good old Hessle Road,” says co-organiser Kim Hepple, of Hull City Council’s Riverside Area Team.
There are race categories for factories, pubs and clubs, primary schools, secondary schools, youth groups, community/resident groups, and large and small shops.
There will also be a prize for the best-dressed shop window.
Money raised will benefit local community projects, including play and training opportunities as well as projects to improve health and reduce antisocial behaviour.
The race will be followed by a carnival on Massey playing fields, which will include fairground rides, sports, arts, music, and activities for children and young people, as well as the chance to meet representatives from local community groups.
There will also be an historical display at the Western Library, on the Boulevard.
