Tigers roar across the world
Hull City AFC’s status as a premiership football club could help boost overseas trade in the region.
It’s estimated that more than a fifth of the world’s population will be watching Premier League matches next season on cable and satellite channels across the world.
And that means Hull’s KC Stadium will be seen in homes, bars and hotels as far afield as Peru, Japan, Finland and Azerbaijan.
“If people overseas have heard of Hull, they’re more likely to do business with a firm from the city,” says Bruce Massie, of the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce.
“And if people are suddenly more aware of the city, they are more likely to come and visit.
“The size of the market for the Premier League is about 1.3 billion people.
“That’s the number of people who will want to buy into it and who will see matches on television.
It’s all very positive for the city.” It’s estimated that Hull City AFC will receive around £40 million for staying in the Premier League, mostly from television deals, but also from merchandising, pitch advertising and corporate hospitality.
The financial benefit for the rest of the city is much harder to measure.
“When Middlesbrough were promoted to the first division in the 1970s, it’s said that production in local factories went up by 22 per cent,” adds Mr Massie.
“The hotels will be busier and there’ll be more people in bars and restaurants.
But we’re talking about a general feel-good factor across the city which you just can’t measure.”
