Portrait of Hull adventurer John Boyes taken from his autobiography 'King of the Wakikuyu', published by Methuen in 1911

Finding great adventurer

Dear Hull in print,
In the December '06 issue, you published my letter about a trip to Kenya last summer, which inspired me to find out about the life of Hull-born adventurer, John Boyes.
Following this, I was contacted by John's great-niece who lives in Hull. She was able to give me information about the family's local connections, and I also found that John published a second book in 1928 - an account of his hunting and trading exploits.

Yours sincerely,
Amy Osbourne,
Hotham Road South

Wilberforce is world famous

Dear Hull in print,
I was interested to see an article about the life and achievements of William Wilberforce in our local newspaper here in New Brunswick, Canada.
I was interested because Wilberforce is part of the history of Hull, the place I grew up in.
The article was all about his achievements in ending slavery and about how he never gave up the fight.
Many thanks for sending me Hull in print, by the way. I really appreciate it.

Yours sincerely,
Vera Hutt,

Friendship

Friendship true, that treasured thing
Lives on and on brings joys to sing,
Memories gay as life goes on,
Sad ones shared but not for long,
Good days, bad days, right or wrong,
As one walks life's road along,
A friendly hand to help us on,
That weary climb so steep, so long.

Friendship comes all unaware
In work or play, maybe leisure.
A friend to give a happy smile,
Our sadness to forget a while.
In our thoughts by day and night,
And never really far away,
Memories we need to share,
With those we love and those who care.
Friendship comes in many ways,
To help each other as one plays,
Not just in past and present things,
But all through life as one sings.
So, as we go along life's path
Be kind to all, forget the wrath.
One thing's sure throughout this life,
Where friendship is can be no strife.
