cash

You and your money

It's just over 40 years since the first ever cash machine (ATM) was installed outside a bank.
With a record 2.83 billion cash machine withdrawals – almost 90 every second – made last year, these machines have become part of our everyday life.
When using an ATM, take special care to avoid becoming a victim of fraud or theft.
When you receive your card, note down the issuer's emergency contact number and keep it somewhere other than your purse or wallet so that if you ever need to report your card lost or stolen you can do so without delay.
Always treat your ATM card as a valuable - just like cash - and do not leave it lying around unattended.
Never keep your PIN numbers written down anywhere near your card and don't store them within a mobile phone.
Go to the cash machine with a friend if it makes you feel more secure.
Choose an ATM in a busy, well-lit place.
If there's someone looking suspicious hanging around, or the machine appears to have been tampered with, do not use it.
Remember that some ATMs (often those inside pubs or shops) will charge you for drawing your money, while others are free to use.
It pays to look around, there's usually a free one not far away.
Shield your PIN numbers when inputting them.
If the machine 'eats' your card, report this to your card issuer immediately.
Wait long enough for all your money to come out, and don't let anyone distract you while putting it in your purse or wallet.
Just a bit of extra care taken when using an ATM could save you a lot of distress and worry.
