Parents have the power
Parents can attend courses to help them raise happy and confident children
 |
Supporting parents: are just a selection of family practitioners who are supporting parents in
Hull. They represent a range of organisations including children's charities, health visitors,
children's centres and Hull City Council antisocial behaviour officers. |
Anyone who has experience of raising a child will know how difficult the task can be.
Which is why, every now and then, parents need somewhere to turn for help and advice.
Now there is a place where you can seek advice on what to do if your son or daughter is hanging around with a bad crowd, drinking alcohol to excess, taking drugs, playing truant from school, or engaging in antisocial behaviour.
Or you feel unable to deal with a child's temper tantrums, unruly behaviour, or during their difficult teenage years.
All these questions and more are being tackled in parenting courses being held across the city to give parents and children a fresh viewpoint on how to overcome their relationship issues.
Evidence shows that stable and caring family relationships raise happy and confident children, which in turn, make young people less likely to commit crime and antisocial behaviour.
Great job
"The majority of parents in Hull are doing a great job, often in challenging or difficult circumstances," says Karen Jackson, a Respect Parenting Practitioner.
"It's not about judging or blaming parents, but giving them the support, knowledge and skills they need to strengthen relationships within the family unit." Karen's job is funded by the government as part of the Respect agenda, which brings the community together to find ways of tackling antisocial behaviour and its causes.
Karen is one of the practitioners supporting parents and families in Hull, as part of the city's parenting strategy.
Open to everyone
Triple P and Strengthening Families are positive parenting programmes which have a record of achieving effective results and improving family relationships.
They are being delivered in Hull as part of a parenting strategy by practitioners from a variety of backgrounds, including health visitors, Citysafe and children's centre workers.
Triple P supports parents of children from 18 months to 17 years of age.
Running for eight weeks, one of the benefits of the course is that it can bring parents together in groups to learn from each other's experiences.
It promotes good communication between parents and children and gives tips on managing a child's behaviour in a constructive and disciplined way.
Strengthening Families runs for seven weeks and is open to parents and children aged 10 to14 years.
It works well where relationships have broken down and helps family members improve how they relate to each other, using family meetings and other techniques to overcome problems.
These are all delivered within a friendly and supportive approach, enabling parents to identify the areas they want to work on.
