Petra swaps her swiss role

#

She's a long way from her previous career in the hotel business in Switzerland – but she's very happy being a community warden on Orchard Park.
What's more, she's still in the business of helping people and delivering quality services.
"We adapt our service to meet the specific needs within the local community," says Petra, who is team leader of six community wardens operating from the One-Stop-Shop at 64 Dibsdane on Orchard Park.
"By calling in on residents to see how they are, requesting support from other agencies on their behalf, or taking them to the doctors, wardens are helping vulnerable people to live more independently in their own homes."
The wardens act as the 'eyes and ears' of the local community, reporting issues such as graffitti and vandalism, removing discarded hypodermic needles from public places and facilitating community clean-up days.
The Community Warden Service doesn't stop there.
"We distribute community safety information and attack alarms, provide crime prevention advice and support anti-bullying campaigns in schools," says Petra.
"We also organise activities to strengthen community ties and promote inclusion of all local people."

Carnival Time

#

The New Bilton Grange carnival takes place at Alderman Kneeshaw Park on August 23 - and promises to be an even bigger and better event than last year.
The event includes a wide range of family activities, including a car boot sale, talent show, fairground rides, falconry and steam engine displays.
There will be entertainment from KCFM, plus guest appearances by some of the Hull KR team.
"We have more time to work on the carnival this year, plus we are working with New Bilton Grange Residents' Association and other local organisations," says Hull City Council park ranger Andy Steer, who is organising the event.
It will be opened by the Lord Mayor at 11am and runs until 4pm.

Around the world in a day

Hull's multi-cultural population came together to celebrate at a unique event at the Octagon Centre – which also gave visitors the chance to learn about different organisations in the city

#

Demonstrations of Indian and African dancing, t'ai chi with fans, swords and silver balls, and Kurdish musicians were just some of the attractions at The Octagon in April.
There was the chance to get a henna tattoo, wear a sari, sample food from different countries around the world, and have your Chinese fortune told.
"Events like this help people understand other cultures and show that even though we are all different we can all live together in Hull," said Patty Cacho de Rivera of the International Heart of Hull group.
But aside from the entertainment, the event was a chance for visitors to learn about some of the many groups and organisations in the city which can help improve lives.
Groups which set up stalls included the Muslim Women's Association, Community Wardens, the Africa Forum, Hull Citysafe, the Red Cross, Voices in Play, West Hull Scouts, Challenging Drug Dependency, Warmzone, and the Open Door Project Methodist Church.
"The event offered people an opportunity to seek advice on a wide range of subjects, and for us to direct them onto the right training courses," says Diana Zaharora, from the Skills 4 Communities group, which had a stall displaying colourful samples of work produced by students.
The event was organised by the Tenants' Forum, a group of tenants and residents from across the city which is dedicated to working with council officers to improve housing services.
"We came together to show that we can all help to create a city to be proud of," said Forum chair Penny Rodmell.
"I hope we can build on the day's success with even bigger events in the future, and I would like to extend our friendship and an invitation to every community in Hull to come and join the Forum."
Other groups participating in the event included: Asian Resource Centre, 167 Centre, Hon Lok Senior Association, Kier plc, Connaught plc, HomeSearch, Private Housing, Tenant Involvement, Citizen Engagement, Welfare Support, Sheltered Housing.

For information about future events call the tenant participation team on 300300.
